History of Vancouver

The modern history of Vancouver began in 1872 when Robert Gray discovered the area and became the first non native to set foot in the area. Before the arrival of Gray the area was inhabited by the Salish Indians. The region's temperate climate, coastal location and excellent food supply made it an ideal place for natives to subsist comfortably for most of the year.

It wasn't until 1858 when gold was discovered in the Fraser River that the area really began to develop. The news of the discovery travelled quickly and with a small number of weeks the news had hit California. Within weeks 25,000 people arrived.

A pre-emptive action by Britain to stave off any thoughts the Untied States had of expanding their boarders saw the arrival of 25 British Royal Engineers. Their aim was to build infrastructure

In 1886 the city of Vancouver was officially incorporated. Just two years later a great fire destroyed the downtown area in just 20 minutes Buildings that were built to replace the destroyed buildings still stand in Vancouver today.

The population reached 155,000 in 1928. During World War II Vancouver had shipyards and factories which helped the then booming economy. Today Vancouver can be described as a cosmopolitan and modern city and it is well worth paying a visit.
